Careers Information and Guidance

Careers education, information, advice and guidance (CEIAG) is an essential part of the support we offer to students at St Matthias Academy. Effective careers support is a vital part of the curriculum and helps to prepare young people for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences they will encounter as they prepare for transition from the Academy or their transition to a post-16 destination and beyond.

During their time at school, all students can expect:

  • the support they need to make the right choices for Key Stage 4 and beyond into their post-16 destination
  • access to up-to-date and unbiased information on future learning and training, careers and labour market information
  • support to develop the self-awareness and career management skills needed for their future
  • formal CEIAG sessions covering employability skills, post-16 options, the world of work, the job market and the skills needed for the future
  • a meaningful encounter with a representative from the world of work each school year; this could be through work experience, Careers Week activities, assemblies, careers talks (in or outside lessons), projects and visits
  • to hear from a range of education and training providers, including colleges, universities and apprenticeship organisations (where appropriate); this could include visits and taster days, as well as assemblies, talks and meetings at school
  • to keep parents/carers informed of their progress and provide parents/carers with information to support students’ career planning and decision-making
  • access to one-to-one guidance with a trained, impartial careers adviser

Independent Careers Guidance & Progression Coaching

Jo Newman from NewMango is an Independent Careers and Progression Adviser who works with St Matthias to ensure that all students receive independent one-to-one careers interviews and follow-up meetings to advise and track progress. We feel it is very important that young people have the support that is available when making choices about what to do after they leave school. With the requirement for young people to stay in Education or Training until they are 18, students need to consider the different pathways and options available.  Jo is available for students to work on their plan on a regular basis, to try and establish a suitable progression route and give as much support and guidance to the student and their parent/carer as required.

Personal career guidance can support students’ persistence, motivation and confidence and help them to see how they can overcome any barriers that prevent them from moving forwards.

NewMango is a collaboration of highly skilled and professionally qualified practitioners in Careers Education, Information, Advice & Guidance.

Our ethos is to support all individuals to move forward successfully into education, employment or training.

We aim to raise the aspirations and motivation of individuals as well as develop their personal effectiveness, resilience and employability skills by providing high quality independent and impartial careers guidance and progression coaching. We specialise in working with vulnerable young people to remove barriers to achieving their career aims and life goals. NewMango works in partnership with schools and other organisations as well as individual referrals for 16-25 years old who require careers guidance and support to progress to the next stage of their education, employment or training goals.
